Big old trees are wonderful things, long out-living us mere humans. Now it's been discovered that they can communicate with one another! This ancient, dramatic and much-photographed oak is in Bushy Park, near Hampton Court. This is a large painting and following "Old Oak" I wanted to work on a scale that allowed for a more abstract treatment of the details. The bigger brush strokes allow every little area of the painting to be an abstract composition. Leaving raw linen showing around the edges draws attention to the materials that the work is made from and gives it a physical presence as an object, rather than just a picture. There's even a secret message hidden in the branches.
